Sporting Group? Retriever?

Akita with ball

Despite the athletic and purposeful stride of this showy girl,  Akitas are in the Working Group -- one of eight AKC breed categories.  As with many of the breed groups, the Working Group includes a diverse and perhaps unintuitive collection of breeds, including Bulldogs, German Pinschers and Great Danes.  Learn more about the Working Group.

AKC is curently considering a realignment of its breed groups, which would create a new "Northern" group, with Akitas, Malamutes, Chow-Chows and Samoyeds, along with other spitz-type dogs.  Akitas should have a ball!
